Megan Rapinoe Biography 

 

Sports Speaker Megan Rapinoe is an American professional soccer player who currently plays midfield for the Seattle Reign FC in the National Women’s Soccer League which formed in 2013. Megan is well-known as a member of the U.S. Women’s National team and was a member of the USWNT that won the Gold Medal in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. Megan is also recognized as the first male or female player in history to score a direct, untouched goal (Goal Olimpico) on a corner kick in the 2012 Olympic Games. Her now famous cross to forward Abby Wombach for a goal in the 122nd minute of the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinal match against Brazil helped lift the team to victory and an eventual silver medal in the tournament. In 2015, Megan was a key factor for the USWNT that brought home the third FIFA World Cup title in U.S. history with an emphatic 5-2 win over Japan in the final match.

Sports Speaker Megan and her twin sister Rachael both attended the University of Portland on soccer scholarships and helped lead the team to a College Cup Championship in 2005.  The next 2 seasons she would experience season-ending ligament injuries but would return in 2008 to lead the conference in assists and be named West Coast Conference Player of the Year. She chose to forgo her final season of eligibility to enter the Women’s Professional Soccer draft and was selected 2nd overall by the Chicago Red Stars. During the 3 years the league was in operation, Megan would play well for three different teams including the Philadelphia Independence after the Red Stars disbanded, and a blockbuster trade to the Magicjack for a reported $100,000. Megan has also played a few games for international clubs including Sydney FC of the W-Austrailia league and became the 5th U.S. woman to play in a UEFA Women’s Champions League final with Olympique Lyonnais

Megan’s sharp play has earned her several endorsement opportunities off the field including a deal and multiple commercial spots with Nike and Samsung. She has also appeared in print media on the cover of Curve magazine and feature stories in Sports Illustrated and the New York Times. She is an active advocate for Athlete Ally, the non-profit organization dedicated to ending homophobia and transphobia in sports.
